What is the preventive health check-up in Austria?

The Austrian preventive health check-up – often referred to as the "Gesundenuntersuchung" – is a free service available to all insured persons aged 18 and over. Its aim is to detect illnesses or risk factors as early as possible, ideally before symptoms appear. Doctors use established examination methods that are regularly reviewed against scientific evidence and adapted to current medical knowledge.

The annual check-up is offered in Austria by general practitioners in private practice, internists and certain healthcare facilities. No referral is required. The costs are covered by the statutory health insurance.

Who is entitled to the health check-up?

All persons with statutory health insurance in Austria aged 18 and over are entitled to the service. The check-up can be carried out once per calendar year – regardless of whether pre-existing conditions are present. Co-insured family members are also entitled to use the service.

Regular participation is particularly recommended:

  • from the age of 40 due to increasing risk of cardiovascular disease
  • in cases of family history (e.g. diabetes, high blood pressure, certain types of cancer)
  • in connection with lifestyle factors such as smoking, being overweight or lack of physical activity
  • if the last medical check-up was a long time ago

Procedure of the health check-up: step by step

The procedure of the preventive health check-up in Austria is largely standardised and follows a structured scheme. As a rule, you should allow around 45 to 60 minutes. Before the appointment, it is often recommended to attend fasting, as a blood sample is taken.

1. Medical history interview

At the beginning, the doctor conducts a detailed conversation. This covers personal and family medical history, current complaints, lifestyle habits (diet, exercise, alcohol, tobacco use) and mental well-being. This information forms the basis for the subsequent examination.

2. Physical examination

A comprehensive physical examination follows. This typically includes:

  • measurement of height, weight, waist circumference and body mass index (BMI)
  • blood pressure and pulse measurement
  • listening to the heart and lungs
  • palpation of the abdomen and lymph nodes
  • inspection of the skin
  • assessment of the musculoskeletal system

3. Laboratory diagnostics

A blood sample and a urine sample are part of the examination. The values measured include, among others:

  • complete blood count
  • blood glucose (fasting glucose)
  • cholesterol levels (total, LDL, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides)
  • liver and kidney values
  • urine status to assess kidney and urinary tract function

For men aged 50 and over, an examination for prostate cancer may also be offered, and for people aged 50 and over, a test for hidden blood in the stool for the early detection of colorectal cancer.

4. Special preventive services

Depending on age and gender, there are additional programmes:

  • Cervical cancer screening: PAP smear at the gynaecologist
  • Mammography screening: for women between 45 and 74 years of age every two years
  • Colonoscopy: for colorectal cancer prevention from the age of 50
  • Periodontal status: dental examination of the supporting structures of the teeth

5. Final discussion and review of results

As soon as all results are available – usually at a follow-up appointment – the findings are discussed together. Abnormal values are put into context, further examinations may be recommended and individual advice on lifestyle is given.

Which illnesses can be detected early?

The annual check-up is designed to detect common and serious illnesses in time. These include, among others:

  • cardiovascular diseases (e.g. high blood pressure, lipid metabolism disorders)
  • type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • kidney and liver diseases
  • certain types of cancer (bowel, breast, cervix, prostate, skin)
  • addictive disorders
  • diseases of the periodontal tissues

Early diagnosis can improve treatment options and reduce the risk of serious consequences.

Benefits of the annual check-up

The benefit of a regular preventive health check-up lies above all in early detection. Many illnesses develop over years without causing noticeable symptoms. If risk factors such as elevated blood pressure or blood glucose levels are identified in good time, they can in many cases be favourably influenced by lifestyle adjustments or appropriate treatment.

Further benefits include:

  • individual advice on nutrition, exercise and stress management
  • review of vaccination status
  • the opportunity to discuss health concerns in a calm setting
  • documentation of the course of health over the years

Participation in the health check-up is voluntary, but it can make an important contribution to long-term health care.

Tips for preparation

Good preparation helps the appointment to run efficiently:

  • attend fasting (no food for at least 8 hours before the blood sample; water is permitted)
  • bring a list of medications you are taking
  • bring along any previous findings, e.g. from specialists
  • bring your vaccination record
  • write down your questions in advance so you do not forget anything

How often should you attend the check-up?

In Austria, an annual check-up is recommended. If risk factors or existing conditions are present, the doctor may suggest additional check-ups at shorter intervals. Between annual appointments, the following also applies: if new symptoms occur, medical assessment should be sought promptly, without waiting for the next scheduled check-up.

Conclusion

The preventive health check-up is an established instrument for health promotion in Austria. It offers the opportunity to have your own state of health reviewed in a structured way, to identify risks at an early stage and to plan preventive measures together with your treating doctor. Anyone who makes regular use of this service makes a valuable contribution to their own health – regardless of how well they currently feel.
