Many know botulinum toxin type A from aesthetics — in medicine it is a treatment established for decades that selectively dampens individual nerve-muscle signals. That is exactly what is used in certain conditions: the agent is injected in very small amounts precisely where it should act.

For chronic migraine, treatment follows the standardised PREEMPT scheme at defined points on the head and neck. For teeth grinding (bruxism), excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) or spasticity the area is defined individually. The injections usually take just 15 to 30 minutes.

The effect begins after a few days, is fully developed after about two weeks and typically lasts 3 to 6 months — after which it can be repeated if needed. Benefit, possible side effects and alternatives are discussed calmly before the first treatment.
